ஆங்கில பழமொழிகளில் ஒரு கூற்று இந்த நிகழ்வை கொண்டு உள்ளது, “Once in a Blue Moon”. இதன் அர்த்தம் என்னவென்றால் மிகவும் அரிதாக என்று பொருள்படும், இதற்கு உதாரணமாக தமிழில் “அத்தி பூத்தாற் போல” என்ற வாக்கியத்தை கூறலாம்.

கடைசியாக நீள நிலவு ஆகஸ்ட் 22 2001 ஆம் ஆண்டு தோன்றியது அடுத்த நீல நிலவு வருகின்ற ஆகஸ்ட் 30ஆம் தேதி தோன்றும் என்று மும்பையில் உள்ள நேரு கோளரங்கத்தின் இயக்குனர் அரவிந்த் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
